Aside from its being the Third Sunday of Easter and other things, tomorrow also is Cinco de Mayo: not Mexico’s Independence Day from Spain, as that is September 16 (1810), but the 1862 date of the outnumbered Mexican army’s victory over French forces, a victory that arguably affected not only the future of Mexico but also of the United States. The date, especially in the United States, now also serves as a celebration of Mexican-American culture and a day for reportedly consuming more beer than even during the Super Bowl, though more avocados are reportedly still consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than on Cinco de Mayo. more
The historic Texan Theater in downtown Kilgore has quickly become a popular venue for events. Although remodeling continues, the spacious room, lighted stage and screen can be transformed into anything imaginable and has already seen its share of weddings, art shows and forums. more
It’s odd, isn’t it, how music takes us to another time and place? Or maybe it’s just me. • In our family, vacations five and six decades ago generally meant a road trip to visit Dad’s parents and siblings in southern Colorado. more

Life with daughters is full of important questions. What’s the best way to provide for their education? How can we ensure that they grow up with a solid moral compass? How can we keep them from dating until my first hip replacement? While finding the answers to these inquiries is vital to the successful rearing of girl children, the most frequent, urgent, and fraught question of all in my household revolves around where we are going out to eat next. more
“A blood donor saved my life; you can save lives, too,” that is what is on the front of the T-shirt that the Blood Center of East Texas will be giving away on Saturday, April 27, at the 23rd Quarterly Kilgore Community Blooddrive cosponsored by the Kilgore Rotary Club and our congregation. Behind the text is a rendering of a cross, making the T-shirt particularly timely, with the blood drive’s coming about one week after Good Friday and Easter. more
“This is so strange,” she said. “I have wanted to paint my entire life and just couldn’t no matter how hard I tried. Even my sister said I couldn’t paint my way out of a paper bag.” Local artist Paula Cullum Jamerson says it with a laugh: “And that’s the truth, I couldn’t.” more
There are times you just wish you could have been a fly on the wall to watch the interaction. Photos are floating around town of a bunch of fishermen from Kilgore and surrounding areas who took an annual trip to the Lakeview Baptist Camp in Lone Star. It seems odd that one of the first things on the agenda was to take a photo of three men sitting in lawn chairs outside the cabin making sign language depicting the three monkeys well known for hear-no-evil, see-no-evil and hear-no-evil. To give you a hint of how the rest of the weekend went those monkeys were Ronnie Hobbs, Reo Calendar and James Campbell. more
It’s time for another installment of “Things you should do before all you have to look forward to is your weekly sponge bath from Nurse Brickbat.” My most recent business travels took me to a conference in usually sunny Long Beach, California. I say “usually” because while I was there, the California sun was apparently still mourning the Rams’ loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII (not to mention Adam Levine’s shirtless halftime show) and was holed up in bed binging on Nutella and Netflix. more
The season of Lent is quickly coming to an end, and the Easter Season will soon begin. Amid all the special services connected with the historical events of Jesus’s death and resurrection, we might easily lose sight of why they occurred, namely, that Jesus’s death and resurrection were for you! more
