Kilgore High School’s Bulldogs continued their – well, dogged – pursuit of district-leader Spring Hill on Tuesday, holding off a scrappy Gilmer team for a key District 16-4A win. Just prior to that, Gilmer’s Lady Buckeyes managed to beat a Kilgore girls team that has been strong at home this year. Both KHS teams were to play at Spring Hill on Friday, after the deadline for this edition of the News Herald. The boys game was to be a matchup of 16-4A’s top two teams: Spring Hill went into the game ranked 14th in the state in Class 4A, and Kilgore went in with just one district loss. more
SOCCER Girls tie Hallsville; boys home Tuesday After a series of one tournament after another, both Kilgore High School soccer teams entered normal regular-season play this week, with the Lady Bulldogs tying Hallsville at Hallsville on Tuesday. more
It would not be hyperbole – exaggeration – to say the Kilgore College Rangers probably saved their season Saturday afternoon in Carthage. Coach Brian Hoberecht and his team dealt Panola College a 64-62 loss in Region XIV Conference play on Saturday, just Panola’s second loss of the conference schedule. It stunned the Ponies, but it lifted the Rangers, who had lost four straight – all conference games – but have two of the next three at home, and evened their conference record (4-4). more
BASKETBALL Kilgore teams sweep Henderson, still in second Notch two more wins for the Kilgore High School basketball programs, who went to Henderson and came away winners in a pair of District 16-4A games. more

When prospective college athletes take recruiting visits, it’s no secret that they are given the “red carpet Treatment” in an effort to woo them to State U or Capital City Tech. But when Lee Livesay visited the University of Louisiana-Monroe on an official football recruiting trip back when he was in high school at Kilgore, coaches didn’t put his name in lights on the stadium scoreboard, nor was he plied with plum on-campus housing. more
