SOCCER Kilgore started, on road in tournaments Both Kilgore High School soccer teams have started their regular season – the Bulldogs are playing in a tournament in Jacksonville, and are 1-0; the Lady Bulldogs are in a tournament at Midlothian. Coach Tom Wait’s Bulldogs picked up their first win of the year in the season opener, knocking off Whitehouse, 1-0. It’s now eight straight wins for the Kilgore College Rangers, who closed 2018 on the right note on Saturday. The Rangers jumped back into action after a near month-long break with a 92-45 thumping of Houston Community College, a non-conference opponent. KC led 48-22 at halftime and never trailed. more
Continuing our look back at 2018 (part I was in the News Herald’s sports section on Saturday, Dec. 29), among the biggest stories were the Kilgore High School girls soccer team reaching the state tournament once again; Kilgore native and NHRA driver Steve Torrence winning the circuit’s Top Fuel championship; and the entire season for Kilgore College football, including the conference championship and bowl win, and subsequent departure of head coach J.J. Eckert after a 12-year tenure. more

BASKETBALL KHS girls win two, boys 1-1 Thursday Both Kilgore High School basketball teams are playing in holiday tournaments – the girls in Hallsville, the boys in Paris – and had success on Thursday’s first day of play. Kilgore’s girls, coached by Trushundra McGill, beat Liberty-Eylau, 42-34, then beat Houston Heights, 43-38. The girls are 15-5 overall, 1-1 in district play, and were to play Pleasant Grove and Marshall on Friday. Their results will determine how they play today. more
The trip to Gilmer to open District 16-4A play might not have gone the way Kilgore girls basketball coach Trushundra McGill wanted, but the Lady Bulldogs’ district home opener couldn’t have gone better. more

The District 16-4A basketball openers for Kilgore went both good, and bad, unfortunately. Kilgore split with Gilmer on Tuesday night in Gilmer, with the Lady Bulldogs falling in a close game, and then the Bulldogs beating the Buckeyes by double-digits in the nightcap. Both KHS teams were to play at home Friday night, hosting Spring Hill, following the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald. more
