Could the Kilgore Bulldogs go unbeaten in the Oil Belt Classic tournament again? They’re off to a good start. Kilgore won both games on Thursday, the first day of the tournament, being played in its entirety here at Driller Park this season after being divided the last few. The Diamond ‘Dogs beat Hardin-Jefferson, 7-4, then edged out Orangefield, 6-5, in the final game of a cold Thursday night. more
Coach Brian Hoberecht doesn’t know what conference rival his team will face Tuesday when the Region XIV Conference tournament begins. But he does know this: the Rangers are the first to hit the floor. Kilgore College, fourth in their zone in the conference, will play in the very first game of the conference tournament on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Centenary College in Shreveport. That’s the home next week of the entire Region XIV Conference, where both men’s and women’s tournaments will be played. more
Experience – and hitting the heck out of the ball – is lifting Kilgore High School’s softball program to heights it hasn’t seen in a while, and to a four-game winning streak. Coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick’s Lady Bulldogs are 7-2 on the season after winning their last four games, including the first two of this weekend’s tournament in Elysian Fields. Kilgore beat Harleton, 6-4, and Elysian Fields, 9-3, on Thursday. KHS was to play twice on Friday, and at least once today. more
Two straight years with trips to the University Interscholastic League’s 3A Region II quarterfinals isn’t a state championship, but it’ll have to be enough for the Sabine High School Cardinals. The Cardinals made it within one round of the regional tournament for a second consecutive season this week, but lost to Tatum, 61-50, at Hallsville in the regional quarterfinal round on Tuesday night. more
For one of the other teams in District 16-4A soccer – like, teams not named Kilgore – it’s getting a little bit like second verse, same as the first. Kilgore again is blowing through the district in both boys and girls play, a combined 8-0: 4-0 for each team. Coach Heidi Hagan’s Lady Bulldogs blasted Tatum in Tatum on Friday night in the messy, rainy cold, 5-1. The Bulldogs played Saturday, and also beat Tatum, 2-0. more
Kilgore High School’s girls basketball season ended in the second round at the hands of one of the best teams in the state. KHS head coach Trushundra McGill had a good first season, and now the Lady Bulldogs are getting recognized as a part of the District 16-4A all-district team, particularly Kilgore’s leading scorer Jamaria Thomas and Alexis Anderson. more
The regular season ends this week for Kilgore College’s basketball programs, and while they’re at opposite ends of the Region XIV Conference spectrum right now, both hope to return to the upcoming conference tournament championship games. The Lady Rangers have won six straight, including over conference leaders like Trinity Valley and Tyler, and are now fourth in the standings. They’re 19-8 overall 11-5 in conference, and play at Bossier Parish tonight at 5:30. They close the regular season on Saturday at home against Jacksonville at 2 p.m. more
Basketball season ended Friday in Athens for the Kilgore Bulldogs, but the Sabine Cardinals’ season continues. The Bulldogs were tripped up, 59-50, Friday night in Athens by Crandall in the UIL’s Class 4A playoffs. Sabine, however, blasted defending Class 3A state tournament team Mount Vernon, 71-50, in a second-round game Friday night at Emory Rains. more
PHOENIX – With son Steve on the sidelines after a rare first round loss, Kilgore’s Billy Torrence showed why he is the best part-time driver in the NHRA Sunday as he guided the second Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to a wire-to-wire victory in the 35th annual Arizona Nationals. more
After going 2-2 last week in their opener and in a Whitehouse tournament, Kilgore High School’s baseball team hopes to ramp things up a bit with their annual Oil Belt Classic tournament here at Driller Park this week. It’s an eight-team tournament and all games are at Driller. Kilgore plays back-to-back tonight, facing Hardin Jefferson at 6 p.m. and Orangefield at 8:15. On Friday, the Bulldogs play just once: vs. Longview, a 6 p.m. start. more
