The 16th Annual Adaptive Sportsfest hosted by POWER, Inc. (People On Wheels Encouraging Responsibility) is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd from 10am to 3pm.
This daylong event is held annually at Lake Gladewater the 4th Saturday of September. It is free for people with disabilities of all ages and their guest(s). Activities include archery and air rifle training clinics, handcycling, fishing and kayaking. The highlight is the waterskiing clinic conducted by the prestigious Metroplex Adaptive Water Sports, which specialize in providing adaptive water recreation for those with physical and developmental disabilities. This event draws nearly three hundred people each year and continues to grow.
POWER, Inc. is a publicly funded non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization in Longview dedicated to breaking down barriers and assisting those with disabilities live life to the fullest. They continue to be one of the few organizations that work to be inclusive of various levels of disabilities. They have participants that have limb loss, paralysis, autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, hearing loss and other challenges. Through their outings and activities, they endeavor to assist others in seeing their potential and helping them to decide to not just exist, but to live life! POWER hosts other free events throughout the calendar year, some of which include, but are not limited to bowling, cookouts, movie-going, family days at the park, and target shooting at the local range, just to name a few.
