Visitation for Barbara Dickerson, 91, of Kilgore will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore. Mrs. Dickerson died Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in Tyler.
She was born April 2, 1927 in Oklahoma City to Vladimir Joseph (Kipe) and Octa Lorene Littell Sladek. Her family moved to East Texas in the early 1930s. Barbara graduated Rocky Mount High School before attending Principia College in Elsha, Illinois. She married Horace B. “Dick” Dickerson September 21, 1946 and they made their home in Kilgore.
Mrs. Dickerson earned her baccalaureate degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. She would go on to teach science in Kilgore, Leverett’s Chapel and Tyler Independent School Districts. Mrs. Dickerson earned her master’s degree from East Texas State University in Commerce. Barbara was a member of the First Church of Christ Science in Boston, Mass., and was a reader at the Kilgore Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, scrapbooking, genealogy and crafting.
Mrs. Dickerson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tod and Janet Dickerson and John and Janie Dickerson of Kilgore; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Michael McShan and Peggy and Joe Welch of Kilgore; nine grandchildren, Brandon Welch of Kilgore, Jamie Bridge of Frisco, Jeff Woodfin of Lantana, Christi Whisenhunt of Kilgore, Amanda Schulz of Burlingame, Calif., Blake Welch of Kilgore, Hunter Dickerson, Travis Dickerson of Cypress, Austin McShan of Dallas; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Patsy Ardry of Overton, Helen Cooper of Moore, Okla., Louise Sportsman of Refugio; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
