Kilgore leads the District 15-4A baseball standings, has from the beginning of district play, and that may not change this season.
The Diamond ‘Dogs picked up another win Thursday night, beating Bullard in Bullard, 2-1, after another solid pitching performance, this time by Javon Smitherman, who threw a complete-game victory.
Kilgore moves to 17-4-2 on the season, and 6-0 in 15-4A competition.
Bullard scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, and led KHS 1-0 for much of the game.
But Kilgore broke through in the top of the sixth.
Catcher Khalon Clayton walked, and then Jerrick “Deuce” Ervin bunted Clayton over to second, and then Collin Pippen singled, scoring Clayton and tying the game at 1-all.
Elijah Williams came on to run for Pippen, and stole second base. Smitherman hit a single to left field, scoring Williams, the go-ahead run. The Bulldogs held Bullard scoreless in the seventh and left with the victory.
Smitherman finished with allowing just the one earned run, five hits and three walks. He struck out five.
