Berneva Thurmond Mayberry, known to family and friends as “Bunt,” passed away Sunday, October 8 in McKinney at the age of 95.
Berneva was born in 1922 in Pleasant Green Community and attended Ned Williams High School. Most of Berneva’s life was spent caring for others. She was a longtime friend and employee of Elmo and Juanita Penn of Kilgore. The Penns loved Berneva as if she were family. Berneva faithfully cared for Mrs. Penn as a friend until her passing.
Mrs. Mayberry was preceded in death by her mother and father, Artis L. and Lillie P Thurmond, as well as her siblings Artis L. Thurmond Jr., Margie Thurmond and Ruby Jean Fleming.
Mrs. Mayberry is survived by her daughter Vivian Jones Johnson of the Colony; two grandsons, Terrance Harvey Colston and wife of McKinney and Kevin Colston and Jasmine of Plano; four great-grandchildren, Victoria Caldwell, LaTerra Colston, Cristian Colston and Julien Colston, and one great-great-grandchild, Naviah Colston.
The celebration of Berneva “Bunt” Mayberry’s home going will be Saturday, October 13 at Rader Funeral Home, 1617 Judson Rd. in Longview, at 3 p.m., with Reverend Lamar Jones, officiating pastor. There will be a private burial for the family at Pine Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches on Sunday Afternoon.
The family would like to extend a very warm appreciation to two of Berneva’s dear friends, Janice Free and Jane Smith, for the love and dedication they have always shown our sweet Bunt. Thank you also for all your help in planning such a beautiful home-going service.
