Basketball success is certainly nothing new in Liberty City – Sabine has had several good teams, boys and girls, over the years.
But cutting down the nets this year was pretty special for coach Colby Carr and the Cardinals.
Sabine (23-9 overall) went 11-1 in District 16-3A, with Arp, Harmony, Gladewater, West Rusk, Troup, White Oak and Winona all involved, and the most recent win: an 82-44 less-than-dramatic regular season finale at SHS on Tuesday.
The victory allowed Sabine to take home the district championship, of course, and each player got to take a turn snipping the nets for a future home in the school’s athletic trophy case. But immediately, it’s time to shift focus to the UIL Class 3A playoffs.
That starts Tuesday night for the Cardinals, who will head just down the road to LeTourneau University in Longview to meet Ore City that night at 7:30.
Against the Raiders, Tray Oliver led Sabine with 22 points. Savoy Goodwyn had 18 and Eylan Goodwyn, 15. Tucker Gabriel, A.J. Gresham and L.J. Mitchell each had five for the Cardinals, and Jace Burns and Scottie Taylor each had three. Bre’den Ford had seven rebounds.
Sabine made the third round last year, beating Beckville and Daingerfield before losing to Mount Vernon, 59-53, in Lindale.
