Chamber hosts state legislators Aug. 31

The Kilgore Chamber of Commerce has developed a new program to connect local business leaders with their legislators, and they’re offering a face-to-face opportunity Aug. 31.

According to chamber President Cindy Morris, Capitol Connect was crafted by the organization’s Government Affairs Committee under chairman John Ben Blackburn, assistant general counsel for Martin Resource Management Corporation.

“The goal of the Government Affairs Committee is to continue to be the voice for business in Kilgore,” Morris said. “Although we participate in the East Texas Coalition through our annual trip to Austin and working through other means with our federal and state legislators, we have worked to bring our legislators to Kilgore to meet with the people of Kilgore and give our business leaders the opportunity to have conversations with those legislators.”

The chamber’s local legislative update at the end of the month will include three state lawmakers: Rep. Travis Clardy (House District 11), Rep. Jay Dean (Dist. 7) and Sen. Bryan Hughes (Senate District 1).

Set in Kilgore College’s Devall Student Center Ballroom, the Aug. 31 event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a networking session and luncheon until 12:15. Next, a 45-minute State Legislative Update will give Clardy, Dean and Hughes time at the podium before a question-and-answer session.

“They will be provided a few questions that our government affairs team is producing. Those questions will be focused on the chamber’s policies, our key issues that we have set as priorities,” Morris noted, including education, local control, economic development and infrastructure. Attendees will also be invited to submit questions and, through the Capitol Connect moderator, “Those questions will be presented to the legislators for an answer.”

A reserved corporate table at the Capitol Connect seats eight and costs $225. Early individual reservations are $22; late registration is $35 per person.

Reservations for the event are due to the chamber by Friday, Aug. 25. Guests can sign up online at (click ‘Calendar’ then Aug. 31 Capitol Connect), via email to or by calling 903-984-5022.
