The race is on – Kilgore Chamber of Commerce is closing in on its goal of a bigger, better, muddier Stars & Scars in the second year.
Who knows what Saturday will bring, but registration so far has topped the inaugural numbers of June 2016. With four days to go, the chamber has 103 registered runners compared to 77 at the same time last year.
At that time, the last stretch saw another 90 sign-ups by the time the race began, including 67 the day-of at Rabbit Creek Offroad Park (1217 Post Oak Rd.).
Looking ahead to Saturday, “If we have 90 more people, I’ll be a happy girl,” Morris said.
She hopes, of course, the Stars & Scars competitors will register in advance: it saves them money (fees for the 5K and 10K jump $10 each Saturday morning) and makes planning more efficient.
That’s especially important this year, with more challenges (and more difficult) in store.
“They’re pretty awesome,” Morris said. “This year we have definitely made it more challenging with added obstacles.”
Advance registration continues through Friday at $55 for the 5K run and $75 for the 10K. Race Day fees May 20 are $65 and $85, respectively. Serving members of the military as well as veterans, police officers and firefighters get $10 off their entry fees.
Barring lightning hazards, plans are for the race to continue rain or shine, with the first set of runners jumping off the starting line at 8 a.m.
