Civic Garden Club reports horticulture awards

Posted

Continuing with its 75th year, Civic Garden Club expanded on gardening knowledge with a program on raised bed gardening. Lending their expertise on this topic were Larry and Melony Ferguson, Master Gardeners, of Longview. They admitted that “ gardening is a fun journey that does not have a destination.”

Sharing their experiences with the community garden at First Baptist, Longview, and their own personal raised beds, the Fergusons acknowledge every year necessitates changes and corrections in experimentation.  No chemicals are used,  thus providing healthy foods for consumption.  Colorful slide pictures showed that raised beds provide excellent results once the initial efforts have been made to cultivate them.

Following the program, President Kim Gore conducted the business meeting. She thanked hostesses Pam Horton, Judy Wilkins, Vickie Hodges and Betty Jeter for providing the refreshments on a festive, Halloween-themed table.

Monthly horticulture tip was given by Judy Wilkins, who spoke on pansies.  These cold-hearty plants thrive best when cooler temperatures are more constant.

Horticulture awards were announced by Lavada Thomas. First Place awards were given to: Martha Clark (5); Marilyn Martin (5); Kim Gore (5); Louise Raby (4); Patty Sanders (5); Joy Jordan (3); Judy Hammond (4); and Judy Wilkins (5).   Judy Hammond also received (1) Second Place.  Kim Gore also received a First Place for her large design. Patty Sanders was given a First Place for her hanging basket of asparagus fern.   In addition, Rita Thompson was given a First Place for her design In September, which was omitted previously.

Raffle winner was Wanda Bittick who also won the drawing for the basket of Halloween candy.

Other reports were given, cheer cards signed, and announcements made of upcoming events. Next month will feature a drawing for a free turkey.
