Debra Elizabeth (Gandy) McDonald passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 in Alvarado, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents Arvill Oakland (A.O.) Gandy and Cynthia Isabel (Smith) Gandy. Debbie as she was known to many, is survived by her husband, Dennis M. McDonald. Additionally, she is survived by daughters, Cynthia Gandy, Natalie Easily, Christlyn Smithart and grandchildren, Kylie Addison and Trevor Smithart. Brothers, Mike Neal, Doug Johnson, and Sister, Mary Elizabeth Hodges. Brandon Baker was a special friend who called her “Mom” and regardless of where he was in the world, he made sure to call her on her Birthday, Mother’s Day and Christmas. She loved him like a son.
An avid traveler, movie lover and lover of her Scotties, Debbie’s real and abiding passions were her family and friends. Debbie sought to instill in her children a zest for life, a commitment to family and friends and the power of a smile. And, Debbie had that smile!
Debra graduated from Kilgore High School in 1976 where she was involved in many activities. Some of those were being the Head Manager for the KHS Hi-Steppers, band and O.E.A. Following High School graduation, she attended and graduated from both Kilgore College and The University of Texas, with honors. Her first job was with the Kilgore News Herald and she retired from Texas Department of Human Resources after a successful career.
The family asks that you spend time with your children and grandchildren, take a walk with loved ones and make a toast to enduring friendships lifelong and beyond.
Per Debbie’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. She asks that at a later date, we gather for a meal, conversation and storytelling. The members of the 1976 KHS graduating class will plan a gathering at a future date and publish details.
Debbie will be missed by many.
