Services for Dorothy Osborne Bates, 95, of Kilgore will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Rader Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dr. Pete Freeman and Reverend David Hampton officiating. Burial will follow in Kilgore Cemetery. Mrs. Osborne Bates died Sunday, April 8, 2018 at her home.
Dorothy was born November 8, 1922 in Valley Mills, Texas, to Alvis Elbert and Winnie Dee Butler. Her family moved to Kilgore when Dorothy was young. She was a 1940 graduate of Kilgore High School and a 1942 graduate of Kilgore College. Dorothy earned her bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University in 1944. Mrs. Bates was a longtime school teacher. Her philosophy in the classroom was to create an atmosphere for learning with the combination of fun and good discipline. Her 22 years as a second-grade teacher were spent at Kilgore Heights and Chandler Elementary Schools. Dorothy was honored in 1988 as KISD Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Osborne Bates was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where she taught 3- and 4-year-olds Sunday School.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Nicks and her husband Bill of Kilgore; a granddaughter, Emily Nicks and her wife Katie of Kilgore; her great-grandchildren, Luka and Maeli Tavey-Nicks; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Tommy Osborne and Kyle Bates.
