A 71-year-old Mississippi man died Monday afternoon about 24 hours after a one-vehicle crash one mile west of Liberty City on Interstate 20.

Allen W. Gary of Mendenhall was traveling eastbound in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Sunday afternoon when the vehicle reportedly swerved onto the right shoulder of the interstate.

According to witnesses and the preliminary crash investigation, the pickup moved back onto the roadway, crossed both lanes and continued into the grass media, rolling multiple times.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the scene about 4:05 p.m. Jan. 7, DPS Staff Sgt. Jean Dark reported.

“Other motorists stopped to assist the driver,” she reported, “who was transported to Christus GSMC – Longview.”

Gary succumbed to his injuries a day after the wreck, pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:37 p.m. Monday. His body was transported to a funeral home in Magee, Mississippi.
