For the most part, rain and stormy weather haven’t affected the Kilgore High School diamond teams all that much this season.
But that changed this week.
Kilgore, already playing different schedules due to Friday’s Good Friday holiday, had their schedules shuffled even more by Monday night’s stormy weather, leaving field conditions too wet to take the field on Tuesday.
So, Kilgore’s games at Chapel Hill were postponed. Both games are District 15-4A contests, and are important.
Kilgore’s softball game at Chapel Hill was rescheduled for tonight at 6:30 p.m., also at Chapel Hill. If the game is unable to be played tonight, both schools hope to play it during the day on Friday, although a time for that game, if it happens, has not yet been set.
Kilgore lost at Gladewater on Friday and is attempting to climb out of the 15-4A cellar and make the playoffs.
The KHS-Chapel Hill baseball game was also postponed, and is set for Friday at 2 p.m.
Complicating matters on both counts is that the Thursday games – both at Bullard – are still set. So now, Kilgore’s baseball Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will play night games on Thursday at Bullard, one way or another playing back-to-back games: baseball playing Thursday and Friday, and softball playing either today and Thursday, or Thursday-Friday.
Kilgore’s baseball team has been on a roll lately, and is now 5-0 in district play. The Bulldogs dealt Gladewater a 5-1 loss at Gladewater on Friday night.
KHS scored a run in the first inning, another in the third, and three in the fifth.
Collin Pippen pitched six innings and had a no-hitter going through five. He left the game having allowed one hit, a run, two walks and with eight strikeouts. Ren Reynolds came on and finished it – Reynolds allowed one hit and struck out two.
At the plate, Jerrick “Deuce” Ervin was 1-for-2 with a double, and scored twice. Pippen went 2-for-2, both singles, with an RBI and scored a run. Javon Smitherman went 2-for-3, including a double. Reynolds went 1-for-3 with a double and scored. Harlee Biggs went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, an RBI and scored, and Gus Witt was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Pippen hasn’t lost a game as a pitcher this season.
Things didn’t go as well for KHS softball, although they looked good early.
In the top of the first at Gladewater, Mackenzie Cavanaugh had a single, and then Bailey Downing followed with another. Two batters later, Kristen Wilson scored them both with a 2-RBI double. Also in the inning, Aubree Norris had an RBI single, and Kilgore led, 3-0.
But it didn’t last long. Kilgore committed three errors that led to three Gladewater runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game – all the runs were unearned.
Kilgore would get one more. Tra’Kaila Graves doubled, and Destiny Mendez was hit by a pitch. Hailee Jo Lewis was hit by a pitch, as well, to load the bases. Wilson put the ball in play and reached on an error, scoring a run and giving Kilgore a 4-3 edge.
But mistakes plagued the Lady ‘Dogs after that. Gladewater led off the third with a home run, and Kilgore just couldn’t get things together, finishing with 11 errors in the game.
