KHS volleyball takes down Henderson; LC wins

After an 0-2 start, the Kilgore High School Lady Bulldogs looked like a sure bet: a sure bet to miss the UIL Class 4A volleyball playoffs.

Two weeks later, after winning three of their last four games, Kilgore still looks like a good bet: a good bet to maybe even earn one of the district’s top two playoff seeds.

Kilgore went to Henderson -- who beat them in the District 16-4A opener -- on Friday and got revenge, dealing the Lady Lions three straight losses by the same score (25-22) for another victory. The Lady Bulldogs are 14-15 overall, 4-3 in district play, and have lost just once (to district leader Bullard) since that first week of the district schedule.

KHS was to host Gilmer Tuesday in a game that would end after the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald. See the results online at kilgorenewsherald.com, and more in Saturday’s edition. The Lady Bulldogs visit Spring Hill in Longview on Friday – that will be a 4:30 p.m. varsity start.

For Kilgore at Henderson, Dayton McElyea had six kills; Miah Thomas, Alexis Anderson and Jada Abercrombie each had five -- Abercrombie had 10 digs. Lauren Bryant had four kills and five aces. Ashton Vallery had 14 assists and three aces. Mackenzie Cavanaugh had 11 digs, and Skyler Day had 10.

Leverett’s Chapel: LC got a win over Union Grove on Friday, the Lady Lions’ fifth district win of the season. They lost the first set, 26-28, but then finished it, 25-19, 25-17, 25-9.

LC is 5-3 in District 19-2A play, and 15-17 overall. Big Sandy, Hawkins, Linden-Kildare, Union Hill and local rival Overton are all in the district with LC.

They were to visit Overton on Tuesday, and will host Union Hill Friday at 4:30.

Against Union Grove, Yesenia Avalos had 20 kills, 22 digs, an assist, two aces and was perfect – 18-of-18 – from the line for 13 points.

Jillian Shaw had 14 kills, two blocks, five digs and three aces; Lexus Haley had eight kills, eight digs, two assists and two aces; Cynthia Paredes had four digs, 32 assists and an ace; Michelle Jamaica had three kills, 17 digs, an assist and six aces; and Britney Frazier had 18 digs.
