“Music and Memories” was the topic for Civic Garden Club’s February meeting. Carolyn Mangum, Activity Director for Arbor Grace Nursing and Rehab Center of Kilgore, spoke on how music can benefit persons with memory issues. Many times music can calm patients and even cause them to participate by singing songs that are familiar to them. Using technology such as MP3 players has been effective. Earphones or a radio turned down low, can be used in their room. Music instead of medication often produces good results.
Following the program, president Kim Gore conducted the business meeting. She thanked hostesses Betty Hren, Pam DeCeault, and Alma Nell Farmer for the Valentine-themed table of refreshments. An arrangement of red roses, by member David Reeves, was the centerpiece and was later awarded to the winner of a random drawing.
Horticulture tip of the month was presented by Joy Jordan. She discussed the cultivation and care of roses. Her suggestions include starting with good soil, manure and at least six hours of sunshine. Water with a soaker hose and mulch to keep weeds away. Pruning is advised when the plant is dormant. Now is a good time to plant them in your garden.
Lavada Thomas, awards chairman, announced the following winners for horticulture specimens: Louise Raby, 5 (1st); Patty Sanders, 5 (1st); Pat Adams, 5(1st); and Judy Wilkins, 5 (1st). Several varieties of daffodils (the club’s flower) were on display.
Upcoming events include the KHPF plant sale benefiting the Dean-Keener-Crim home restoration, March 16 and the District Meeting in Texarkana is March 15.
Our next meeting on March 13, will be the annual club fundraiser—an auction of garden-related items and home-baked goods. Members are invited to wear their green aprons for St. Patrick’s Day coming up.
