June Alice Kirby Whitten, 95, of Kilgore passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Treviso Transitional Care in Longview after a brief illness.
June was born on June 4, 1921 in Hope, Ark., to parents Otis Kirby and Mary M. Bennett. The family settled in the Mount Vernon area of East Texas, where she attended school. She was working at Curve Court Cafe in Mount Vernon where she met the love of her life, Roy Atwell Whitten, a dashing and handsome Navy man. They married August 16, 1943, they had four children, two boys and two girls. They were married 53 years.
June loved being a mother and homemaker. She especially enjoyed having her children and grandchildren with her and Atwell for large family get-togethers both at their home and at the Lake o’ the Pines where they owned property. She loved flowers and her yard, she liked to fish. She was highly competitive and enjoyed many spirited games of dominos, 42, and cards with her family and many friends. She loved to gamble at the horse races and penny slots at the casinos. She was also an avid Rangers baseball fan. Almost to the end of her life she played Yahtzee with her brother and his wife on the Sundays they visited her.
June loved people, all the people she met along the way of her lifetime. She was sweet, loyal, and loving to all who came in contact with her. She always said I love you a dozen times with a hug and a kiss. She leaves behind many friends and caretakers at Country Place, now Arabella Assisted Living in Kilgore, where she lived for the last 14 years. She will be very much missed there.
June was a Baptist and was true to her God, she listened to her audio Bible everyday when her eyesight eventually failed her. June leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family and her Lord for all to follow.
