It’s been said it’s good to be the king. It’s also apparently pretty good to be the queen.
Both Kilgore High School soccer programs – girls and boys – opened their respective District 16-4A schedules here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium with wins over Sabine on Tuesday night. Kilgore’s teams have won district championships in both so often the last decade, it’s difficult to remember when a KHS team didn’t hoist the crown.
They were to both play at Gladewater on Friday night, following the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald, and will both be home Tuesday against Waskom – girls will play at 5, boys at 7.
Coach Heidi Hagan’s Lady Bulldogs have had some pretty drastic changes in their lineup since reaching the UIL Class 4A state tournament last spring, but still have firepower. Kylie Nichols, Cristina Rosas and Emma Taylor each had three goals; Zoe Craven and Laramie Cox each had a goal, and Taylor had two assists; Jasmine Wheat had one.
Kilgore, coached by Tom Wait, got a tough match from Sabine’s boys, but scored two goals in the first half and held on for the 2-0 win. The Bulldogs are two seasons removed now from their 4A state title in 2016, and a return to Georgetown for another run at the crown would be a fantastic finish to the school year.
KHS has two of its next three games at home.
