Hosting a 16-team tennis tournament over four sites, including Longview-area schools, is a major undertaking, but Kilgore tennis did that last weekend, and brought home a few good finishes.
Kilgore’s William Bennett finished third in boys B singles, and David Chavarria and Trystan Dobbs finished third in boys A doubles in the Bulldogs’ second tournament of the year.
Coach Jason Maroney’s Kilgore squad is slated to compete in a tournament in Tyler, hosted by Tyler Lee, this Friday, and to go to Bryan for the annual Bryan tourney on Feb. 23-24.
The Bulldogs hosted girls doubles, boys doubles, boys and girls singles, and mixed doubles at KHS, Longview High, Spring Hill and Pine Tree on Friday, with a host of schools participating: those four teams, as well as All-Saints, Center, Central Heights, Elysian Fields, Gladewater, Henderson, Lindale, Nacogdoches, Sulphur Springs, Van, Whitehouse and Wills Point.
Wills Point won the overall trophy (137 points). All-Saints finished with 124, as did Lindale. Kilgore had 112.
In the boys B singles field, Bennett won his first two matches (over Elysian Fields’ Justiss Dudley, 8-3), and Center’s Abram Morales, 6-2, 6-2, before losing to Aidan Phillips of Wills Point, 6-1, 6-1, for third. Phillips won that division.
In boys A doubles, Chavarria and Dobbs won their first match, 8-0, over a Pine Tree team, then beat a team from Nac in the second round. Kilgore lost, 6-1, 6-2, to a team from All-Saints, but beat Lindale, 8-3, for third.
