“A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
HAPPY Easter. We at the News Herald hope yours is more than a mad, basket-waving scramble across the lawn. (Though we hope you get that, too.)
SETH Sorensen, city engineer, with his wife, Charlotta, and children moved here from Illinois a bit over five years ago. And now he’s on the move again. He has accepted a position as assistant city administrator in Pecos, a far-west-Texas community where we’re guessing he’ll have to deal with fewer flood issues.
THOSE of us who are of a certain age will remember Pecos as the home of Billie Sol Estes. The rest of you will have to Google Billie Sol. You should know in advance the Estes story won a Pulitzer Prize for the Pecos enterprise – at the time (and maybe to this day) it’s the smallest newspaper to win the highest prize in journalism.
YES, yes, we know. It’s also the home of the Law West of the Pecos museum. (The Judge Roy Bean museum is a couple hundred miles southeast.)
THANKS are due those who made the decision and did the work: the facades of both the old Crim and Texan theaters have been dolled up, the Texan got an exterior paint job and that horrid lean-to scabbed onto the back of the theater has been removed.
PART of the work is just necessary clean-up, but part of it is in anticipation of Chip Hale’s Reel East Texas Film Festival scheduled for the Texan in the fall.
MANY likely are unaware there is actually a fund to fix-the-theaters to which contributions may be made and that proceeds from the annual KilGogh Arts Festival are dedicated to that project.
