“Hating anything in the way of ill natured gossip ourselves, we are always grateful for those who do it for us and do it well.”

– Saki

LED by Main Street Advisory Board president Carrie Jackson and city hall’s Main Street liaison Carol Windham, downtowners are laying plans for a remarkable July.

WHILE the details are being ironed out, there are plans for an ice cream social with free ice cream, watermelons, music, fireworks, a parade for kids and pets – all part of a plan to capture a news title: The Most Patriotic Town in Texas.

CAMP in Big Bend, two-step at Gruene Hall, eat at Snow’s BBQ in Lexington, swim at Hamilton Pool near Austin, eat at the original Whataburger in Corpus Christi, visit Palo Duro Canyon, see the lighting of the oil derricks in Kilgore…

A WEBSITE called Wide Open Country came up with a list of 20 things every Texan should do before they die. Attending our November derrick-lighting ceremony made the list at the 8th position.

WE knew it was special, of course.

WITH oil still hovering close to $50 per barrel and natural gas at about $3.30 per mcf, the number of operating rotary rigs is moving up. That’s a good thing in Texas and certainly welcome news in Kilgore.

ACCORDING to Baker Hughes, there were 877 rigs running the U.S. – of which 443 were in Texas. As you would expect, the vast majority of the rigs running here are in the Permian Basin and southern Texas. At the end of last week, there were 18 trigs operating in Texas Railroad Commission District 6, which includes the East Texas field.

FOR comparison’s sake, at the end of the first week of 2017, Baker Hughes reported 327 active rigs in Texas, including 15 in RRC District 6.

A recent study from the International Bottled Water Association found that North American companies companies use 1.39 litres of water to make one liter of the bottled stuff.
