“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

“A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;”

– Ecclesiastes 3,

verses 1 and 2

FROM ZERO to 322.96 miles per hour in the space of 440 yards. That’s about 253 miles per hour faster than my mom’s 1969 Buick LeSabre.

STEVE Torrence’s time through the quarter miles at Indianapolis last weekend was 322.96 miles per hour, or 42 percent of the 767.269 mph speed of sound.

THERE’S more detail on the sports page but in a nutshell:

STEVE Torrence’s CAPCO crew finished the “regular season” at the top of the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Top Fuel dragster standings. In two weeks, the NHRA competition enters the Countdown to the Championship – think of it as the playoffs of the drag racing world with Torrence going in as the top seed in his category.

IT’S nearly ready.

THE splash pad is all-but done. True, summer is all-but done, too, but there’ll be some hot Saturdays and warm evenings over the next couple of months – the splash pad will be well broken in before cool weather arrives.

DIDN’T we just have a great season of Fridays After 5 concerts. Many thanks to city hall’s Carol Windham for the work that went into it.

ON THE subject of gratitude, Julie Beck (proprietress with sister Carrie Jackson at J & Co.) has put in a ton of time organizing a send-off dinner for the National Guard members who will depart here Friday, Sept. 8… we owe her for the time and trouble organizing an event that will reinforce Kilgore’s reputation as the coolest little town in Texas.

JULIE’S work and a long list of donors will make Thursday night’s dinner a memorable event for the Guardsmen and their families.
