KILGOROUND

“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. We need an independent media to hold power to account. Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.”

– George W. Bush.

TEXAS Bucket List, one of those travel Texas television shows, will broadcast a segment featuring the Texas Broadcast Museum this weekend… but you’re going to have to be an early-bird to watch it.

THE program will be on CBS at (gulp) 5 a.m. Sunday. No, really… 5 a.m.

OKTOBERFEST on Main (and Kilgore) street is next Saturday.

LIVE entertainment, beer garden, cake walk, kids activities, vendors and a Kilgore’s-Got-Talent contest are just some of the things planned for this year’s event.

THE whole thing starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 9 p.m.

FOR more information and applications for vendors and the Kilgore’s-Got-Talent contest, visit kilgoremainstreet.com.

FROM THE You-Learn-Something-Every-Day file:

NEW homes and their ductwork have to be vacuum tested in the name of energy efficiency. A licensed tester, like Lee Layman, cranks up his equipment and “pulls a vacuum” on the entire house. And then he does the same thing for the ductwork.

THE house has to measure less than three air changes per hour or it fails and someone has to circle back around with some extra caulk.

THURSDAY was World Teacher Day.

Thank you – all the way back to Miss Pratt in kindergarten – but especially to my demanding Jacksonville High School English teachers: Ms. Childress, Ms. Boles and Mr. Everett.

“THE United Nations’ (UN) World Teachers’ Day celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education at all levels. This enables children and adults of all ages to learn to take part in and contribute to their local community and global society.”
