ASH Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the time of reflection and penitence leading up to Easter Sunday. It’s the day the priest imposes a thumb-print of ash on the penitents.

EPISCOPALS, in an outreach effort, now offer what they call Ashes To-Go next Wednesday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. Will it be sacriligious if we call it Drive-Thru Absolution? Ash-n-Dash? Brake and Bless?

WHATEVER you call it, St. Paul’s Episcopal will be dispensing ashes at 314 N. Henderson Blvd, across from the library. Drive up, roll down your window, collect the ash and the blessing, and head out to your next errand.

TEXAS Central Partners is proposing a high-speed rail from Dallas to Houston with train stations in those two cities plus one about 25 miles east of College Station. It will cost about $15 billion. TCP says it will fund the project with private money and perhaps some federal loans. We’re seeing estimated ticket costs of about $180, each way. There are no announced plans for who would pick up the pieces, and pay for picking up the pieces, if TCP were to go belly-up.
