“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

--Antoine de Saint-Exupery

THE East Texas Pipe Organ Festival (Silent Move Edition) is going to be quite the celebration of the Aeolian-Skinner Opus at First Presbyterian.

IN addition to the silent movies at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, visiting organists will perform concerts at 10 a.m. each of those mornings. The concerts and the movies are free of charge.

MARYAH McHam and Martyn Popey, Jazz duo, this week continue Main Street’s Fridays After 5 series of free concerts.

THE first two concerts of the season were moved inside the Texan because of inclement weather – but as of this moment there’s no threat of rain. The concert will be back where it belongs, under the derricks at the World’s Richest Acre Park on Commerce Street.

THIS week’s concert will be the first since the implementation of the “Quiet Zone” – meaning the concert should be not be interrupted by 100-decibel train horns.

WE’RE trying to decide whether Chad Nault has a great job or a miserable job.

AT the behest of East Texas Saltwater disposal, Chad’s job is to drive around East Texas, visit about a hundred creek-side monitoring stations, climb out of the truck into the summer heat, measure the salt content in the creek, climb back in the truck and drive to the next creek on his circuit… all in the interest of making sure none of Saltwater’s pipelines are leaking.

(WE confess: we’ve been seeing him – or his predecessor – at the railing of the Turkey Creek bridge on Broadway Blvd. but we thought he was merely a big-hearted guy, stopping occasionally to feed the resident ducks.)

SAY what you will about sliced bread. I’m saying the best thing since pneumatic tires is packaged gravy mix.
