KILGOROUND

Posted

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

– Abraham Lincoln

REMINDER: Kilgore’s Fourth of July Extravaganza in City Park – music, food vendors, fireworks – starts at 6 p.m. (and, yes, the Lazy S Splash Pad in the northwest corner of the park will be up and running) on the Fourth of July.

OVERTON’S Fourth of July activities begin with food and such in Overton City Park at 5 p.m.

In both communities, the fireworks show will begin shortly after dark.

Las Tejanitas 2, out at the intersection of Hwy. 42 and FM 1252, recently sold and will be renamed El Buen Pastor. (According to my Spanish-to-English dictionary, that translates as The Good Shepherd.)

Carmen Del Leon bought the restaurant from Diana Rodriguez. Last Tejanitas continues to operate (and offer $1 tacos at lunch time on Wednesday) on North Street in downtown Kilgore.

JULY 1 brought some new laws in places around the country. In San Francisco, the minimum wage became $15 per hour. In Seattle, plastic straws and “silverware” are verboten. Floridians now have to wait until they’re 18 to get married. In Virginia, elementary school kids get more recess time.

YOUR shot at winning $5000 is just ahead.

AGAIN this year, the Boys and Girls Club is staging a Reverse Draw-Down. They’ll sell 100 tickets at $100 each and draw numbers until the last number wins... That C-note will get you in the drawing and a steak dinner. Dinner-only tickets will be available for $30 – stay tuned for details on where to get the tix.

NEW this year: the draw-down will be at the Texan, August 17.

COOL venue… workers are hustling to finish up the air conditioning at the Texan. To our knowledge a wedding scheduled for the old theater on Saturday, July 7 is a first for that building. The city-owned building is available for your wedding (Or anniversary, or reunion or…). Contact Sonya Trout at city hall.
