“If the rain spoils our picnic, but saves a farmer’s crop, who are we to say it shouldn’t rain?”

– Tom Barrett

IT’S Rangerette week.

WHEN we think of summer at Kilgore College, our tendency is to think of the campus as empty. That would be wrong.

IN ADDITION to those students in town from summer classes, the Shakespeare Festival folks keep the parking lot occupied. And those young women who hope to grow up to be Rangerettes, keep Stark Hall dormitory active.

RECENT rain prompted officials in Gregg, Rusk and Smith counties to lift the burn ban. That means those of you who live outside the city limits can fire up your trash barrels.

THERE’S this from a Texas Farm Bureau press release on how to spot a farmer or rancher during a drought: “They are the folks constantly craning their necks skyward to inspect every cloud, evaluating every puff of wind for a hint of moisture. They shush the room when the weather report comes on TV. They twirl the radio dial for news of rain. All the weather sites are bookmarked on their smartphones”

WAIT… did he say twirl the radio dial?
