“I am reminded of the professor who, in his declining hours, was asked by his devoted pupils for his final counsel. He replied, 'Verify your quotations.'”

- Sir Winston Churchill

THE Boys and Girls Club offers heartfelt thanks to the Jimi Mankins family, Kevin Offerding and Case knives for the fundraiser last Saturday. The Case auction raised $2950 for the club… and brought out-of-town guests (Case collectors) from as far as Indiana.

MONDAY was a big day at Kilgore-based Citizens Bank – Gladewater National Bank got a new sign to prove it has been officially renamed Citizens Bank. Citizens now has 11 branch locations – as distant as Yorktown – including two locations here.

WHAT a terrific time to be in Kilgore. We’re constantly amazed by the sheer number of widely varied events. If you’re thinking there’s nothing to do here, you’re not paying attention.

SATURDAY begins with a ribbon-cutting at the new Creekside Trail, moves to the Kilgore College Hall of Fame luncheon and concludes with a German dirndl contest at Brigitta’s Hungarian Restaurant.

NEXT Saturday, Oct. 13, includes Sabine ISD’s education foundation soiree at 6 p.m. and Main Street Kilgore’s Oktoberfest from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m.

OF importance to high school football fans: Potentially one of the best games in Texas will be played in Gladewater this week. West Rusk Raiders – ranked fifth in 3A-division 1 – meet the sixth-ranked Gladewater Bears at Jack V, (“V as in Victory,” we’re told) Murphy Stadium.

WALLET Hub – a website that offers credit information – compiles all kinds of financial data and looks at it from unusual angles.

THIS week they reported on the growth of local economies across the country, ranking U.S. cities from 1 (fastest-growing) to 515 (least fast-growing). On their list, Tyler ranked 310 and Longview ranked 505. Shreveport ranked 514.
