“A man calumniated is doubly injured - first by him who utters the calumny, and then by him who believes it.”

– Herodotus (Greek historian, born 485 B.C.)

COUNTING Thanksgiving – because I’m religious about observing it – there are six religious holidays between now and the end of the year. A couple are Hindu, one is Jewish, one is Islamic and, of course, Christmas is a Christian observance.

THROW in the East Texas Oilmen’s Chili Cook-off (13 days and counting), Halloween and Veterans Day – now you’re at nine holidays on the horizon.

SO, when Harvest Moon CountryGrass sends out a Happy Holiday card, they’re not thumbing their nose at Fox News… there really are a bunch of happy holidays ahead of us.

THE band, featuring our friend Fred Gebhardt, gets a shout-out – there is our first holiday greeting card of the new season.

AMONG the 104 films to be screened at this year’s Reel East Texas Film Festival is “One Act Play: a film about high school drama.”

THE film “presents an inside look at the intense dramas unfolding between theatre directors and their ensembles as they travel across Texas for this elimination style tournament culminating at the state competition in Austin.”

THE film by Hallsville native Landry Gideon (he swears he has many friends in Kilgore) won Best Texas Doc (Jury) and Best Texas Feature (Audience) at the Austin Revolution Film Festival.

REEL East Texas Film Festival will screen films at the Texan and at Kilgore College’s Dodson Auditorium November 15-18.

DAVID Reeves (Flowers By Design and Shops on Main) has been capturing feral cats downtown and having them spayed or neutered. He, Julie Beck and Carrie Jackson (The Coin Investor) then feed the cats a modest amount. In exchange, the cats make life hard for downtown rodents – there’s no catch and release for these rodents.
