THERE’S but one contested seat on the Kilgore city council, but it’s an important one: seven-year mayor Ronnie Spradlin is being challenged by council member Victor Boyd.

HEAR their views on governance in a forum hosted by the youth at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church – 4 p.m. Sunday. Co-sponsors are the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and the News Herald.

THERE are no contested races at Kilgore ISD or Kilgore College.

MOMENTUM is already building for the Reel East Texas Film Festival.

ORGANIZER Chip Hale, whose documentary "Sweethearts of the Gridiron" won awards at film festivals here and abroad, has already received 26 entries – and the festival is not until November. Those entries will be screened for the public in the old Texan Theater, now getting a bit of a facelift.

WITH Byron Berkley’s film festival at 4 Star Cinema, Hale’s film festival at the Texan and the perennially successful Texas Shakespeare Festival, Kilgore’s reputation has spread far beyond the oil patch.

IF you get the sense that oil and gas traffic is picking up, you’re right. Amanda Nobles, executive director of Kilgore economic Development Corporation, confirmed this week that a number of recently-vacant buildings have been re-occupied.

ST. Luke’s is hosting a Dave Ramsey seminar Sunday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Fireplace Room. Ramsey is the personal finance guy who offers seminars on family budgeting and getting out of debt.
