LC, West Rusk win; Kilgore, Sabine come up short

Both Kilgore and Sabine came up short in their first-round matches in the UIL volleyball playoffs on Tuesday; West Rusk won its playoff, and Leverett’s Chapel won, too.

LC won a second-round UIL Class 1A playoff game, bouncing back from down two to eliminate Yantis, 22-25, 8-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-9, on Friday night at Union Grove.

LC will take on Avery on Tuesday at Mount Vernon in a regional quarterfinal game, starting at 6 p.m.

For LC against Yantis, Jillian Shaw had 17 kills, four blocks and 21 digs. Yesenia Avalos had 10 kills, three blocks, 47 digs, four aces, and was perfect, 25-of-25, serving for 17 points.

Also, Michelle Jamaica had three kills, 30 digs and an ace, and Cynthia Paredes had three digs, 32 assists, four aces and was 22-of-23 serving for 17 points.

Kilgore: Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs traveled to Sulphur Springs Tuesday for a Class 4A bi-district matchup with North Lamar. Kilgore won the first set, 29-27, but then lost the next three, 25-23, 25-13, 25-14.

Seniors for Kilgore this year were (in alphabetical order) Mackenzie Cavanaugh, Rylie Mann, Haley Page, Shelby Page, and Nicki Rawls. The senior class this year helped the Lady Bulldogs to the program’s third playoff appearance in four seasons.

KHS is coached by Lacy Coldiron, who just finished up her fourth season. The Lady Bulldogs finished up with a 16-20 overall record, and third place in District 16-4A. “Another good year,” Coldiron told the News Herald. “Better than last year, and plan to keep moving in that direction.”

Sabine: Sabine lost to Tatum Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, 23-25, 22-25, 23-25, in a matchup played at Pine Tree High School in Longview.

Coach Kristen Reaves’ Lady Cardinals had just one senior: captain Sarah Davis. Sabine finished the season 23-15.

West Rusk: West Rusk also played in Longview, beating Elysian Fields in four, 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 27-25, to advance to the next round of the 3A playoffs. Kayla Lewis recorded 22 kills for the Lady Raiders, who will face Commerce in the second round this weekend, although arrangements weren’t set at press time for this story.

The Lady Raiders, coached by Melissa Neal, are 32-11 on the season.

Also for WR, Allison Bobbitt had 35 digs; Claire Nichols had 33 assists and 24 digs, and Sydnee Martin had 15 digs. Hannah Trichel had eight kills, and Brooklyn Floyd had seven.
