A Kilgore man was killed west of Kilgore Tuesday night when a driver – allegedly speeding, reportedly intoxicated – hit the pedestrian on Green Blackman Road.
Investigators say 37-year-old Michael Lydall Grant of Overton fled the scene after running a stop sign about 9:20 p.m. and striking 34-year-old Lechell Scott of Kilgore.
According to Trooper Jean Dark of the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to the fatal crash on CR 3652 (Green Blackman) south of East Goforth Road (CR 3615) 9:22 p.m. Tuesday.
From preliminary crash records, Grant was driving a 1994 Mercury Topaz, “traveling south on 3652 at a high rate of speed,” Dark reported. “The driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of CR-3652 and CR-3615, striking a pedestrian … who was walking north on CR-3652.
“The driver fled the scene but was later found and subsequently arrested.”
Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Talyna Carlson pronounced Scott's death at the scene, Dark noted. The man's body was taken to Cunningham Funeral Home in Kilgore.
Grant was booked into Gregg County Jail Wednesday, charged with Accident Involving Death and Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle in addition to a parole blue warrant out of Austin. No bond was set as of this writing.
“The crash remains under investigation,” Dark concluded.
