KHS falls to Center; district starts Friday

Kilgore High School’s softball bats just wouldn’t find the ball Tuesday in the Lady Bulldogs’ home opener, a 7-1 loss to Center.

Kilgore (11-9 on the season) was to play at Sabine in the final non-district game of the season on Friday, following the deadline for this issue of the News Herald. The Lady ‘Dogs are off the early portion of next week for spring break, and then they’ll host Gladewater. That’s the District 15-4A game for both teams, and Kilgore’s is asking fans to wear orange for their annual Orange-Out, a fundraiser for charity in the name of former KHS softball standout Lynzee Ford.

Kristen Wilson took the loss on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs, but she had 10 strikeouts. Kilgore’s only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on four walks – Bailey Downing scored the run on a walk to Hailee Jo Lewis.

‘Dogs, Lady ‘Dogs blank Gladewater

Kilgore High School’s soccer teams maintained their respective leads in the District 16-4A standings with an 11-0 win over Gladewater for the Lady Bulldogs, then a 9-0 win for the ‘Dogs, here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

Both teams were to play Henderson on Friday, after the deadline for this edition of the News Herald – the Bulldogs were to play at Henderson, and the girls game at home.

Kilgore’s boys, coached by Austin Walker, lead the district standings by a game over Henderson, prior to Friday’s outcome. The KHS girls, coached by Heidi Hagan-McPeak, lead by a game, as well.

Both teams are off Tuesday night for spring break, but are back in action against Carthage next Friday, March 17 – the girls game is at Carthage, varsity-only, and starts at 5. The Bulldogs will be at home, with a junior varsity game at 5:15 p.m., and varsity to follow.
