Athletes head to area meets tomorrow

Track and field athletes from Kilgore High and all the Kilgore-area schools will compete in UIL area meets on Thursday to determine who gets to move on to the regional round, and keep their state meet hopes alive.

Kilgore High is sending a bunch, as usual. They’ll go to Carthage tomorrow for the area meet; field events will begin at 10 a.m., and running events at 1:30.

Jonathan Shepherd is going in both the 100 and 200 meter boys dash events. Shepherd, Cameron Jackson, Anthony Smith, and Greg Isaac and their alternates (of coach Phillip Lane’s choosing) are going in the 400 meter relay. Shep won both the 100 and 200 at district in Spring Hill two weeks ago, and the 400 relay team also won.

Calvin Woodside will go for Kilgore in the shot put, and Bucky Duke for KHS in the discus (that’s a correction from the News Herald’s previous story, where it was stated Duke finished too low to qualify).

A whole slew of Kilgore girls are going. Chicuquita Crain won the 100 meter dash at district and is going. Maliyah Holland is going in the 200. Emma Taylor is going in both the 400 meter run and the 800, after winning both at district, and teammate Zoe Craven in the 800. Craven will go in the mile run, and the two-mile, too – she won both at district. Craven also made the cross-country state meet for KHS last fall.

Others headed to area for Kilgore’s girls: Symonne Brooks in the 100 meter hurdles; Jamaria Thomas in the 300 hurdles and the high jump; the 800 relay team of Irelyn Williams, Mariya Mitchell, Thomas and Maliyah Holland; the mile relay team of Taylor, Skyelar Howell, Mitchell and Crain; the trio of Holland, Crain and Thomas in the long jump; Kaleeia Johnson in both the shot and the discus; both Brooks and Jada Abercrombie in the triple jump; and Gracie Clower in the pole vault.

Track athletes from Sabine and West Rusk will compete on Thursday at their 3A area meet, and West Rusk, in New London, will host it at Bruce Bradshaw Stadium at 10 a.m.

Results from all the area meets will be right here in the News Herald on Saturday, and online at kilgorenewsherald.com.

Regionals this week in Longview for KHS

Six members of the Kilgore High School tennis team will attempt to make the UIL state tournament by doing well in the regional tournament, being played Thursday and Friday at Longview High School’s courts.

Girls doubles District 15-4A champions Jordan Butts and Ally Wilkins will compete at regionals, as will Graham Tyra (in boys singles), Pooja Patel (in girls singles), and the boys doubles team of Trystan Dobbs and David Chavarria.

Kilgore has had success in regionals as of late, sending a few doubles teams to the state tournament in College Station. KHS tennis is coached by Jason Maroney and Rhonda Fletcher.
