Overton advances to third round

Heating up at the right time – the postseason – the Overton Lady Mustangs are off to the UIL Class 2A playoffs’ third round.

Overton (18-5), which hasn’t lost since mid-April, meets Avery (12-4) next, in the Region III quarterfinals, and it’ll be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gilmer High School. The winner moves on to the regional semifinals against either West Sabine (24-5) or Grapeland (28-7-2).

Coach Justin Arnold’s Lady Mustangs got a complete-game, seven-inning performance on the mound from pitcher Jaylin Blakeney, who had six strikeouts. Christal Dike and Ryan Lee each had two hits; Maci Carpenter had 2 RBI, and Kameron Martin and Lee each had one.

State track meet with locals from KHS, LC, SHS this weekend

Kilgore, Sabine and Leverett’s Chapel are all sending athletes to the UIL’s state track and field championships at the University of Texas in Austin this weekend.

The meet is Friday and Saturday, at UT’s football stadium. Student tickets are $7 each; adults are $12. The events begin at 8 a.m. both days.

On Friday, Kilgore’s Zoe Craven, competing on the state level for an incredible third time this school year, will run in the 4A girls two-mile at 10 a.m. Craven, just a freshman, represented KHS in the state cross-country meet and played in the 4A girls soccer state semifinals. Also on Friday, Kristen Stuart of Sabine will compete in the 3A girls triple jump at noon.

Saturday, it’s a much busier day. The KHS boys 400 meter relay will run at noon (Jonathan Shepherd, Greg Isaac, A.J. Smith, Cameron Jackson, and alternates Josh Fletcher and Noah Odom). At 12:45, Yesenia Avalos of LC will run in the girls 100 meter hurdles. At 1:05, Shepherd will run for Kilgore in the boys 100 meter dash.

Kilgore’s girls 800 meter relay team – Maliyah Holland, Jamaria Thomas, Symonne Brooks, Irelyn Williams, Carter Williams, Chicuquita Crain and Key’Deriana Roy – will run at 1:25. LC’s Grayson Bathke will run in the boys 400 meter run at 1:45. Avalos runs again, this time in the girls 300 hurdles, at 2:05, and Holland runs for Kilgore in the girls 200 meter dash at 2:25.

See results from all of those local athletes on kilgorenewsherald.com on Saturday evening, and coverage in Wednesday’s News Herald print edition.
