Mattie Phillips, 98, passed away July 10, 2018 in Jacksonville. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Kilgore City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at Rader Funeral Home.
Mattie was born March 10, 1920 in Sapulpa, Okla., to Oscar and Nora Butcher Dunaway. Her family moved to Kilgore during the depression in the 1930s to try and find work in the oil business. It was here that she met and married the love of her life, Irvin Paul Phillips. They were active members of the Church of the Nazarene. Mattie served many roles at both the Kilgore and Jacksonville churches.
She loved to sew, read, and was an excellent cook. Mattie was a stay at home mom until her son was in 7th grade, then she returned to work as a cook at Eastview Elementary School. “Mamaw,” as she was known by her grandchildren, had a great sense of humor and was extremely funny. She will be missed by all who were blessed to have known and loved her.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Irvin Paul Phillips; sisters, Dorothy Windham and Lois Kaufman; and her brother, Frank Dunaway.
Mattie is survived by her son, Carl Phillips (Marlena) of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Amy Bobbitt (Brian) of Jacksonville, Andre Phillips (Alejandra) of Tyler, Aaron Phillips (Marie) of Humble, and Allen Phillips (Daisy) of Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Boston Bobbitt, Amelia Phillips, Benjamin Garcia, Estella Phillips, and one on the way.
