Mechanic recovering after accidental gun discharge Monday

A shop mechanic was wounded Monday afternoon in an accidental shooting at Patterson Chevrolet.

According to Kilgore Police Department records, the 39-year-old Longview resident had a handgun in his toolbox in the shop at 1611 U.S. Hwy. 259. It’s not yet clear what happened, but it’s likely the 9mm pistol discharged as the man was moving tools in the container.

“He was removing it and accidentally shot himself in the chest one time,” KPD Assistant Chief Roman Roberson confirmed Tuesday morning. “Nobody else was injured.”

The man was transported to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview and underwent emergency surgery. He was in recovery Tuesday, Roberson added, listed in critical condition.

“Unfortunately, he had some kind of issue with the pistol and ended up shooting himself.”
