OVERTON -- Union Grove pitched a second-half shutout and pulled away to knock off Overton, 32-14, Friday in a non-district game Friday here at Coach Chester Roy Stadium.
The Lions scored twice in the first quarter, again in the second, and led 18-14 at the break.
Mikie Webb found Matthew Bower from 7 yards out in the third quarter to push the lead to 10 after the 2-point conversion failed, and Grayson Barnett finished off the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Webb ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries for UG and also threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Lions (2-0).
Hudson Rogers ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in the loss for Overton, which drops to 1-1 on the season and hosts Carlisle Friday.
Rogers’ first touchdown with 5:40 to go in the opening quarter put Overton up 8-0 after Luke Osburn threw the 2-point conversion to Cole Marshall on a halfback pass.
Webb answered three plays into Union Grove’s next drive with a 64-yard touchdown run, but the 2-point conversion failed to leave the Mustangs up 8-6.
The Lions went ahead to stay when Webb threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Henderson with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The conversion pass again failed and left Union Grove up 12-8.
They pushed the lead to 10 when Webb scored on a 51-yard touchdown run with 7:41 left in the first half.
Rogers took a dive play up the middle for a 33-yard touchdown run with 3:09 remaining in the second quarter to get Overton within 18-14 at the break.
Henderson had 105 yards rushing for Union Grove, while Osburn and Marshall combined for 71 yards on 21 carries for the Mustangs. Jackson Clark caught a 14-yard pass and also ran for 18 yards.
