A devoted husband, beloved father, and faithful friend, Pete Godfrey passed away Monday, August 7, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Family and friends will celebrate his incredible life on Friday, August 11, at 10 a.m. at his church home of First Baptist Church of Kilgore. Dr. Glenn Young and Dr. Pete Freeman will officiate.

Pete was born August 17, 1953 in Texarkana to Peter Evart and Betty Ann Godfrey. He grew up in Houston alongside his sister Barbara, before joining the United States Navy in 1974. While proudly serving our country as a Petty Officer 3rd Class, Pete was stationed onboard the USS Okinawa and traveled to the Philippines, Vietnam, China and Japan.

Pete moved to Kilgore in 1977 to attend Kilgore College and begin work. There he met Shelly, his wife of 35 years, and would go on to become partner and President of SSI Maxim Company. Together they have three daughters. Pete loved his Saturdays on the golf course, hunting trips with his buddies, and family vacations with his wife and girls. Pete rooted for his Texas Rangers every season and was a fervent history buff.

Pete is survived by his wife, Shelly Broadwater Godfrey of Liberty City; daughters, Autria Lindsay (and husband Paul), of Washington, D.C., Laura Godfrey of Dallas, Lindsay Godfrey of Dallas; sister, Barbara Godfrey of Plano; father, Peter E. Godfrey Jr. of Longview; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank Dr. Larry Frase, Dr. Joseph “Chip” Hodges, the incredible staff of Texas Oncology – Longview Cancer Center, and his personal caregivers from Hospice of East Texas. Donations in Pete’s memory may be made to Hospice of East Texas.
