RCSO identifies local boom as tannerite explosion

Official: Group blew up tree stump

The boom heard throughout this area about 7:37 p.m. came from individuals blowing up a tree stump in Rusk County, the sheriff’s office reports.

“It was tannerite,” RCSO Sgt. David Roberts just confirmed. “Guys blew up some tannerite is all it was.”

The sound of the blast carried into Kilgore and surrounding areas.

Roberts had no details on how much of the explosive material the individuals used to obliterate the stump earlier this evening. After seeing a flood of chatter on social media, the group called the sheriff’s office to quell the speculation.

“I don’t know (how much), but it had to be a lot,” Roberts said. “It’s perfectly legal.”

Local dispatchers were inundated with calls about the explosion, prompting Kilgore PD to remind residents only to call in with emergencies.

According to Roberts, “We received calls from west of Shreveport, Smith County and Jacksonville” after the explosion.
