Sabine loses hard-fought battle at Troup; girls trip, too

Posted

Sabine didn’t come out on top on either of the District 15-3A showdowns at Troup on Friday night. But they did give Troup all it wanted – twice – and set the stage for what might be a pair of incredible rematches the next time the schools meet.

Sabine’s boys challenged the Tigers and came up short, 62-52, just a couple of hours after the Lady Cardinals lost a 50-48 heartbreaker. Both Sabine teams were to host West Rusk Tuesday night, after the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald. They’ll both be on the road Friday at Arp.

Troup 62, Sabine 52 (boys): The Tigers were red-hot, shooting 61 percent from the field. Troup also somehow avoided being called for fouls: the Tigers only had one in the entire first half, and just three with 1:20 left in the game.

Troup led 30-22 at halftime before Sabine (14-6) roared back in the third quarter. But after missing a shot at the end of the third that would’ve gotten them within one (43-42), Sabine allowed Troup to get on a roll and stretch its lead to 13 in the fourth. The Cardinals were unable to get a lot closer.

Eylan Goodwyn had a rough first half but bounced back in a big way, scoring 22 in the second, including 15 of Sabine’s 18 in the third. Will Shawn finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tray Oliver had six points. Nate Willis had four. Hunter Grotemat and Glenn George each had two. Grotemat had four rebounds and two assists.

It was the first district loss for the Cardinals. Both Troup teams visit Sabine on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Troup 50, Sabine 48 (girls): Sabine led the Lady Tigers almost the entire game, allowing Troup to pass them up late in the contest. It was also the first loss for the Lady Cardinals in district play.

Kristen Stuart again led SHS with 24 points. Genesis Willett chipped in 10. Gracie Taylor scored five. Sarah Davis had four. Miranda Cook added three and Mikinzi Cantrell had two.
