Trio of Tigers advance to State meet

Troup won the team championship at the Region 3, Division III powerlifting championships in Elkhart March 10.

Nine boys from Troup participated at the regional level for the first time in the school’s history. Five lifters placed in the top five of their respective weight classes, and that propelled Troup to the team title.

Troup had two lifters leave with best lifter awards, including Josh Williams and Ramiro Martinez. Reece Clark set a regional record of 1,545 pounds for the best total weight. 

Martinez, Clark and Trent Allen advanced to the State championships in Abilene March 25.  

Martinez was in the 165-pound class, and his deadlift of 540 pounds was the best in the class. He also had lifts of 500 (pounds) in the squat and 290 in the bench for a total of 1,330 pounds and first place in his class.

Clark also captured first place in the 198-pound class with lifts of 660 in the squat, 330 in the bench and 555 in the deadlift for a total of 1,545, which set a meet record in his class. Only three totals were better, all in the super heavyweight, or four classifications higher.

Trent Allen placed fourth in the 220-pound class with lifts of 630 in the squat, 340 in the bench and 480 in the deadlift for a total of 1,450 pounds. He qualified to advance to the State meet in his class.

Malik Gilliam was fourth in the super heavyweight class with lifts of 680 (squat), 355 (bench) and 475 (deadlift) for a total of 1,510 pounds. Also, Caleb Smith was fourth in the 132-pound class with lifts of 405, 200 and 350 for a total of 955 pounds.

David Allen had lifts of 490, 285 and 475 for a total of 1,250 and eighth place in the 198-pound class; Josh Williams had lifts of 390, 165 and 480 for a total of 1,035 and eighth place in the 148-pound class; Michael Zuniga placed 10th in the 148-pound class with lifts of 395, 245 and 390 for a total of 1,030; and Tristan Clark placed 11th in the 181-pound class with lifts of 465, 260 and 470 for a total of 1,195 pounds.

Troup won the team title with 20 points to edge Kemp, which collected 19 points. Host Elkhart was third with 16 points, Palmer finished with 15 and Teague collected 14 points for fifth place. Participants represented 52 schools at the meet.

The Region 3, Division III meet for girls was held at Fairfield March 2. Katie York placed third in the 132-pound class with lifts of 345, 150 and 265 for a total of 760 pounds, or five pounds from second place. She set a regional record with her lift in the squat and the lift was the best on light platforms.

Cheyenne Henson placed fifth in the 165-pound class with lifts of 310, 140 and 300 for a total of 750 pounds; Jalyce Dennis was fifth in the 198-pound class with lifts of 335, 160 and 325 for a total of 820; and Andrea Tilley placed 10th in the 181-pound class with lifts of 325 and 170 for a total of 495 pounds. Tilley was unable to record a lift in the deadlift.
